Backup light contact replacement?

Post by Habitat.pat »

I just noticed that the rubber "spring"/seal on the back of my backup lights have disintegrated. Has anyone found a replacement part? It looks like the whole socket is soldered into the reflector so I will look for a suitable replacement socket that uses a standard spring & make a boot to seal it.

Keep well.

Peace,
Pat

Are you referring to item 19 from this diagram?

There were a couple of designs. The rubber back version is not the most durable.

No, the part I'm looking at is the actual contact for the bulb center contact on the reflector. It is a flexible rubber piece with an electrical contact in the middle of it. Can't imagine that Nissan would have designed such a problematic piece.

The socket is cylindrical with the a flair at the back that this rubber part snaps over.

I found that the cylindrical part can be unsoldered from the reflector & remove the flange from a single contact tail light socket & use it in the backup light. The only problem is that if you use a standard bulb in the backup light, there isn't enough room for the wire inside the housing. I am converting to LED lamps & there are some shorter ones available that will allow me to move the socket farther forward to allow for the wires. I'll shoot some photos in a day or so when I get it completed.

Keep safe.

Peace,
Pat

I had time today to replace the light bulb sockets in my backup lights. It was really easy.

Original socket:

The replacement socket was taken from a roadster single contact tail light socket. Remove the rubber, unsolder the ground wire & press off the metal ring that holds the socket in the rubber.

The flanged socket in the backup light is soldered into the reflector, so it is easily removed. The replacement socket is inserted into the the reflector & soldered in place. The socket needs to be installed farther into the reflector to allow room for the wire to come out the back of the socket & clear the housing. This requires a shorter bulb. Solder the ground wire to the socket.

Peace,
Pat
