66 1600 Identification help please

Post by Slackline »

Hi.

I just got this 66 and I would like some help identifying the motor.

The head is aluminum.

It leaks oil in the right rear corner. I know there is an oil galley in that corner. I torqued the head bolts up to 55 lbs cold and it is still leaking. Some of the head bolts were either 'frozen' or torqued over 55 lbs already. I am assuming a new head gasket is required. I don't know that I can get one by this weekend though.

I did not know that the 66 came with an aluminum head.

Thanks.

It looks like the factory 1600. I think there is an oil gally "locator" ring that goes in the block and into the head when assembled. The leak you describe sounds like it was not inserted when the head was last off. This is a common leak area. You may be able to reuse the head gasket if you can get the head off without damaging it.

I bought some of the Toyota FIPG that has been highly recommended. I assume that is used to put a bead around the galley to seal it.

Does the locator ring have a seal on it?

no it is a metal ring, like a very short small tube, physically sits in a recess on the block and in the head through the head gasket.

Do you have a picture or diagram with this tube? I've actually never seen one, and can't find it in the parts book I have......
I thought this was sealed by the metal ring around the oil hole on the gasket..... :smt017

If you get the serial # from the block we can look up whether it is a '66 engine. I don't believe any '66 came with an aluminum head.

Thanks,

Just below #1 sparkplug on the block. On a small angled pad, should be an R-xxxxx (5? numbers).

Make sure that the head bolts are in the proper location. One is longer than the others.

Per the Rallye website, it puts it at a 67.5 block.

I believe Dean has some details on sealing the oil passage when installing the head gasket on his site. Gasket quality varies alot, some of the H20 stuff is not very good. Head studs are also a good investment. If you do remove the head, be very careful if you use the scotchbrite style discs to clean the head surface. They can remove material.
As far as a tube around the oil passage, I don't recall one being there, but there was some discussion years ago about machining the block and head to accept one and still retain the same size oil passage.
