steel valve seats for todays gas?

Post by 70MTRoadster »

Since I now have the "new to me" 69 U20 with 67,000 miles on it plus I am taking every opportunity to drive it now, what are your thoughts on the stock vavle seats and how they will hold up to todays gas? When I put an A87 closed chamber head on my dual SU L20b I had them put in steel valve seats cuz everybody said that was the thing to do.

I drive a Roadster or 510 almost every day!

What is the estimated cost of doing that if you bring the head into a machinist shop, and would they have the seats or are those Roadster specific parts?

valve seats on my stroker were custom made by my machinist. But then again, I have oversized valves in the Col. Joe prepped head I run.

......What's in the barn is for sale. What do you need?

If the head is fine for now, no point in pulling it off. Down the road, yes its worth doing. The head currently on the car has stock seats that are so worn I can't adjust the #1 intake valve any more. (Hence the reason it doesn't get driven much these days.) My race head has steel seats.

Hard seats make sense for a race engine or any engine that will see 10's of thousands of miles each year. Many roadsters
these days are lucky if they go a few thousand miles/year. In the later case, the brass intake seats are irrelevant. (Ex are already steel). Just depends on how much you plan to drive it realistically.
