Wiper Motor Speeds

Hi all,

I've been wondering for a while if the wiper motor is actually supposed to have two speeds. Both of my roadsters seem to have one speed but two settings on the switch. You can pull it out one or two clicks. Both switch positions seem to have the same wiper speed though.
Is this normal or is there something wrong with the switches on both my roadsters?

I have been wondering the same thing about my '67

Add a resistor of sorts ( lowers volts note may needs a cooling source) or speed controller. Out of a salvage car

They have two speeds, I think it means your high speed (TURBO) is not working. a resister will slow them down.

So does it mean that there is a resistor in the circuit that has burned out and can be replaced?

Unlike many cars, there is no external resistor. I think its two circuits. Low is one and high is both.

anybody have a wiring diagram of the wiper motor leads? Same issue with a 70

It is like the heater fan multi speed ...the blower motor or any elect motor will draw the amps it draws you cannot limit amps to it unless your talking speed control ( turning the swt on /off many times per sec.
Back in roadster days it used a resister of sorts to drop voltage then the magnets are less strong which lowers power ...a different speed. That mtr probably dtaws 3 amps ? So it wpuld have to have a coil to drop volts. Which will get hot
The 280 and 300 zx had a blower fan transister that boosted the volts and thus amps to the blower( kinda like a turbo boost for the motor

I was just looking at the wiring diagram in the Tech Wiki, it looks like the wiper motor has two winding and the dash switch engages them individually and together (although the diagram shows a switch in the motor too which I am assuming is a thermal cut off). Check the dash switch for continuity on both settings. My cars (69 and 70) all have two speed wipers.

Here is the early car. Probably the same layout on the motor, just a different switch. The speed change has to do with how it is routed through the motor winding as near as I can tell.

Here is a link to a drawing I did of the current flow in the wiper circuit for the 66-67. I was surprised by how the current flows all through this thing.

I haven't taken apart a 68-70 switch to see how it works. The schematic in the wiki has a chart for that switch.

That internal switch is the PARK switch. It keeps the motor running until it in the "park" position out of your vision.

Yes, it has a set of contacts inside the gear housing that breaks contact when the motor comes around.

Here is the inside of the 67.5-70 wiper switch. So they are wired just a little different.
