Breather location R16

Post by dynaguy »

Got my motor back from machine shop. Had my machinist leave the soft plug out of the driver's side rear location. On my spare motor, there was a breather tube that ran down the side of the block, see pic. That valve cover does not have a breather tube connection (I like the look better) . My other valve cover has the tube connection, that I believe a hose to air cleaner goes to. Any input as to which is better, if at all?

TIA

Pat
p.s. There is a bolt that goes through hole into block to hold tube on

Hi Went and looked. On 1966 spl 311 R16, 1600 cc The rear has a soft plog in it. Valve cover (aluminum) has a vent hose going over to the air cleaner. Look in the books I have, 'Service manual datsun sports model 311 series, Nissan motor co. LTD Models SPL (L) 311-U shoe the breather tube. I think it depends on year? Tube part # is 15262 12200 Tube breather. I have a Question on rear leaf springs. Wanting to respring the springs. (Pole Spring, Spokane) Any suggestions. The bach sets a little low, (squats) I have spring Number. Hope this helps. OU812

The later type of crankcase breather, to the air cleaner, is more environmentally friendly since the engine consumes any blow-by vapour.
The early block tube is OK on a well maintained engine but will fart out oily fumes on a well worn engine with excessive blow-by.
The valve cover cap will be different for each system: sealed for later engines, vented for early engines.
Nissanman, just trying to help.
