Things that go bump...

Post by brn2rde »

Been doing short test drives of my Daughters 69 before I turn her loose with it, and I am getting a very strange sound, only while making sharp right hand turns. A very faint "Bump, bump, bump. Evenly timed and again only on about 10mph right turns. It might be coming from rear end, sound is sorta similar to a bad cv joint, but more of a dull, faint thud. Definitely not a rubbing sound. The rear end itself was never rebuilt when we did the restoration, but fluid looked perfect so I deferred on that.

I know this is the worst kind of question to try to answer, but any tips or hints to point me in the right direction

Ditto on the color and I was thinking wheel bearing too. Or her boyfriend hidden in the trunk.
Can be a dangerous move if your not careful but you can sit in the back when someone else drives and hang out each side to narrow down where the sound comes from. I don't mean stuntman hang over, just a lean to hear the wheel and to see if it is on one side or seems to be the same noise from either side which might mean the diff in the middle.

Thanks for the tips. Problem only repeats while turning right, so not the u joint and running it on stands wont help. Maybe could be rear wheel bearing? I guess we will wait for clear weather and go do right handed donuts in a parking lot. Figures. About the only part on the car that did not get a complete overhaul.

Turning puts more pressure on the drive shaft so yes it often causes a joint to make a grown. When it doesnt going straight. Sure may be a bearing too
On jacks running use a long screw driver on suspected part to ear to hear the moving parts or mech stetha scope
