Do You Have Recirculating Ball Type Steering?

Post by jhayden »

There seems to be a fair amount of confusion about this, and among newbys it’s quite understandable. Although the “RB” description is used more often, the majority of roadsters had the earlier “Worm and Peg.”

If your car’s serial number is below SPL 25000 or SRL 09000, you likely have the earlier worm type:

Eric Smeby’s write-up in the 311s Tech Wiki provides an excellent step-by-step description for those who have an opportunity to do the switch to the later RB.

Why go to the trouble? “It is more responsive while transmitting less road shocks to the wheel. It operates smoother and more efficiently and lasts longer usually as long as the oil level is maintained.” (Rallye Datsun Roadster Parts Catalog, p 148)

Finally, here is a re-post of the Nissan Service Bulletin on the RB steering originally provided to 311s.org by Gerardo Magana (fairladyparts.com):

Hope this information is helpful to newbys and 311 owners who choose (de rigueur) to run much larger wheel/tyre combos than stock.
