u20 valve stem seals and alternatives

Post by 70MTRoadster »

I've come into possession of a 1969 SU U20/5 sp. combo with 67,000 original miles on it, pulled for and SR swap. It had been sitting in the car since the early 80's. Long story short, I am at the point of replacing the valve stem seals since they "must" be tired after sitting so long. I can just replace with original stuff from Rallye. Dean sells newer design "better" ones but I don't want to have to have a machine shop be involved to use them. Has anyone done/tried other alternatives that will work without any machine work being done to the head? On my 1600 510 engine I was able to use Ford V6 seals that stopped the smoking at start up of the old, hardened, tired original seals. Anybody? Thanks, Scott

I wouldn't put a head back on without it being at least checked by my machine shop.

Your L-16 (510 engine) has guides to accept snap press on valve seals that are typical for many engines. The stock U-20 is set up for the "hat style" seals that are held in place by the valve springs. They function as a valve spring seat and a valve seal.

Trying to delete the additional posts but can't seem to do it, sorry.

OK, thanks for the info. I'll just replace with same kind "new" ones then.

The 1600 uses the “hat” type valve seals, which are available as a H20 forklift part, but I don’t know what a U20: uses. New seals can make a big difference though.
