5 spd. transmission inspection questions

Post by dynaguy »

So, I have this 5spd. tranny. Purchased awhile ago in a car and parts deal. I would like to determine it's condition without total disassembly if possible. I have the cases off. It is surprisingly clean inside, gear oil was clean also. No shavings on drain magnet. Gears show no obvious wear. Shifts into all gears easily. Input shaft has little to no play. It has double nuts on tail shaft behind 5th gear. 5th appears to be non-splined.

Is there a way to measure wear on syncros while still in place? Anything else I can check without going any further?

TIA,

Pat Mahoney

It would be best to have him walk you through it. I had my hands on the transmission as he explained what to do and what to look for. Very helpful info. Pat

Sounds like this is something that should be written up for the techwiki.

The trans man at my dealer made a old clutch hub into a special tool by adding a 7 inch pulley that hooked to a belt to a washer machine motor and had the yoke of a driveshaft that had a brake rotor of sorts with a bike caliper brake . he used tractor hydro fluid. I helped him sometimes work a lever that loosens the belt so he could shift up & down
It was mostly swapping used trans back then
Instead of rebuilding to make $$ ( you ever tried being a dealership trans tech? And coming out good on payday) and. The datsun factory training school had one of these systems there
Mitsu had one too, its a simple way to seeing if it has obvious problems

That does not sound simple at all, though maybe it was for him. We need the home version. :)

I’m not sure what you would actually learn from just spinning the Inuit shaft. It would not reveal if it was going to pop out of gear or how hard it would be to shift gears or anything else. The problem is more of how much time it takes to remove and replace the engine and transmission.

We did shift gears of course . by loosening the belt
To hear it running the main reason ...needle bearings good ? Believe me, this guy knew manual and auto trans.
The parts houses get theorys that we swapped parts on it if you pull apart their trans and say its got problems
Try it youll like it
One of the tests is to see how quick / with how much pressure the sycro brings up the speed gear to speed, the taper on it gets polished and the blocker ring is less able to do that , that tells you how it will shift , it doesnt need to actually go into gear
You do realize at the rebuild factory they have something like this. ( a hydro version) they dont put it on a car and test drive it to see if its good to go
