Camber too negative, no shims installed

Post by Mainer311 »

How are you guys fixing too negative of a camber, if there are no shims in the first place? I have severe uneven wear across the tread on my front tires. The insides are down to the wear bars, and the outsides look brand new.

Basically, is there any way to move the upper control arms outwards to fix camber? I don’t have any shims to remove, so I can’t go that route. It’s only a problem on the passenger side.

Thanks,
Jordan

Its kind of work for the alignment machine
Bent spindle or frame shift. or ride height wrong, lower ball jt very worn.
really need to accurately know
Camber ,caster, toe, SAI, included angle ,turning angle , ride height
Early and later control arms same?

If I'm not mistaken, you need to add some shims to the upper A-arm. I think mine has about 1/8* thick on each bolt.
You can match the thickness of the other side and be pretty close.
As Redroadster said, an alignment shop can fix all that up, but you might want to provide them the specs you want.

RustBucket, that’s only if you want more negative. I’m already too negative.

Tires are toe-out too, which could be compounding the problem.

While you are at it, you might want to go to longer bolts and put nylocks on inside - some have reported unwinding bolts.

The spl311 has the shims on the inside of the frame mount so removing shims gives more pos camber like he said

Any pics of it from the front ?

You can always put a steel blade under it and rent it out as a roadgrader.

I'd check your toe rather than camber. I'm at -1.8 degrees and I eat the outsides of my tires on the track. On the street they wear pretty evenly. I run 0 toe.

Will, it could very well be toe as well. I think with the camber and toe both off it's shredding tires. Honestly though, the little 185's survived 5 years, and that's w/o any rotating. I may be imagining things, but it sort of looks like my frame is twisted slightly inwards on the passenger side. It's possible that my eyes are just trying to find an explanation for the bad alignment though.

I messed with the toe a little bit yesterday morning and the steering got really heavy. I suspect with the toe out, the steering was easier, and would explain why the car was unstable while driving in a straight line. I'm going to take it back to the shop today and have them set the toe, and be done with it. If I have to buy $50 tires every 5 years, then so be it.
