Stripped screw stopper in Master cylinder

Post by The Neck »

Hay all,

As I slowly work through this car, I feel like I take two steps forward then one step back. I got the master cylinder rebuild kit all installed, and bled it with ease. As I was putting it back together, I realized the threads holding the screw stopper in the underside of the cylinder has stripped out. It's got just enough threads to hold it in, but as I went out 24 and 48 hours later, I'm seeing a single drop form underneath.

I'm certainly not a fan of a leaky master cylinder, so I'd like to get this fixed as appropriately as possible especially since I just dropped $130 on the rebuild kit.

If this is stripped, and it's part of the housing, am I up the creek? My second though was to put a very small amount of epoxy around those threads, and clamp it in place for a seal.

I did a search and nothing came up for these specific threads being stripped, I'd prefer not to have to purchase another MC as I just rebuild this one.

no expert, making all this up - BUT since you KNOW the purpose of the screw, why not remove the MC, retap and insert an appropriately sized screw!

Perhaps a few wraps of Teflon tape. May not hold up to brake fluid, but worth a try.

I thought about this, the threads on both the cylinder and screw are stripped most of the way. There's not much to hold on to, and the end of the screw is significantly smaller diameter than the threaded piece.

In looking at it, it seems the first option would be to try the teflon tape, second would be the epoxy.

I was mostly wondering if anyone else has ran into this before.
