Can somebody tell me what these two wires do in an early 67 roadster?

Post by 111jag »

I believe the black wire with white line is the ignition wire. What is the other wire, I couldn't find it in the electrical diagram? They both come out of the harness together. The car is an early 67.

Ballast resistor and coil.
66 stroker, almost done.
67 basket case, paint coming soon.

They might be both side of the coil because of the fact that they are tie together.

There is a Black/White wire from the ignition to the ballast resister and then another short black/white wire from the other side of the resister to the coil.

This all assumes you have a ballast resister.

The black wire went to the ballast resister and the blk/w went to the coil, but what does the black wire do? I know the blk/w wire is an ignition wire according to the diagram, and hence that is why it was connected to the coil?(I'm not an expert on this, and not sure how it all works).

On early cars it is really simple..12V black/white goes to one side of the resistor whenever the key is ON, the opposite side of the resistor connects to coil+.

coil- just goes over to the distributor points. The coil- wire is typically plain black.

That's not how it was hooked up. I had the black wire going to the resistor and then from the resistor to the +ve coil. I also had the blk/w wire hooked up to the +ve coil. I had another black wire from the -ve of the coil to the distributor. What I really want to know is do I connect both of these wires to the +ve of the coil with the red wire of a pertronix ignitor?(total of 3 wires on the positive of the coil, 1 on the -ve)

So with Pertronix and an early car it is equally easy:

Coil- Black pertronix wire only
Black&white wire from ignition switch- to one side of resistor And Red Pertronix wire
Coil+ Opposite side of resistor

So in this case, the only original wire used is the ignition ON wire (blk/white)

If I am not using a resistor then do I attach both wires to the +ve coil or do I attach the blk/w to the +ve and the black to the -ve, thus having 2 wires on the +ve (red pert wire & blk/w) and 2 wires on the -ve ( black wire & black pert wire)?

If your coil has an internal resistor:

Blk/white IGN wire AND red Pertronix to +coil (only)
The black Pertronix wire to -coil (only)

No other connections. J

Thank you that was the answer I was looking for. Would my previous points hookup, with the blk/w wire to the coil and the black wire to the resistor then to the +ve coil have caused my spark plug wires to malfunction (was using ngk 6mm) or points to fry? My car ran fine for like 20-30 rides over 2 summers then all of a sudden idled rough then died and wouldn't start. Tried everything to get her going except change the points but couldn't. Hence the changeover to Pertronix with new distributor, coil and 8.5mm wires and my question about the wire hookup.

Sounds like something simply died, points, condensor or resistor-hard to say if your wiring had anything to do with it.
I think most Pertronix systems do use a resistor, so your coil should have an internal or external one. Your Pertronix may
may fail prematurely without one.

I would not suggest connecting any extra wires to the coil, there are all kinds of ways to trip things up-keep it simple.

I did buy a 12V 3ohm Coil. So I am good without a resistor from what I have read on the forum. As for my previous coil, condenser, resister all tested good. Two of my spark plug wires were toast.

Right,3ohms means the resistor is in the coil-shoud be fine.

Can I still hook up the condenser to the coil +ve for radio noise suppression with a Pertronix setup?
