Dash to Engine harness connections

Post by jonny8 »

Hey hive mind of 311s!

Car: Late 1965 / 1600
Vin: SPL31100368

At two different points in time I purchased a new engine bay harness and dashboard harness, from two different vendors. It was not planned, it just happened like that!

I'm in the final stage of putting this together and I noticed a difference. Where these two harnesses connect, in the original (see below) I have the two block connectors and three bullet connectors.

In the new dash harnesses, I have an additional blue/white wire with bullet connector and no place to connect it to on the engine harness.

So what is this wire supposed to connect to?

I have a vague memory that at some point they changed how the Cigarette lighter was wired? Is this blue/white wire the other end of the CL? And if so, just it just connect to the fuse box via a separate cable?

Or is it something completely different. Please help!

Highly likely that the dash loom is for a 67.5.
The wiring schematic for that year shows a B/W wire heading off to the fuse box on its lonesome from the cigar lighter.
Have a look in the tech-wiki at the 67.5 schematic.

It just happens that I have on loan to me a set of 65 1500 harnesses.

65 positive ground harnesses are almost the same as the 66-67 but have some differences. With a bit of work you can make a 66 work.

Here are the 65 connections. Two plugs and three wires. Black ground, red/white high beam, green/white coming from the starter going to the fuse box. The cigarette lighter power wire, blue/white is spliced to the fog light power wire.

The blue/white wire from the engine harness that connects to this is spliced on to the green/white wire that goes to the horn relay in the engine harness.

Also keep in mind that the 65 1500 does not have a voltage gauge regulator.

Also be aware that the plug layout between the 65 and 66-67 are different. You cannot plug the two together without causing a problem.

Can you post pictures of the rest of the dash harness? It looks like you definitely have two different models.

Edit: I stand corrected, I just looked the plugs over, they are the same for both.

Thanks @curtis

My car is odd. I think of it as a very early 66. It a 1600 with some 1500 characteristics. The engine harness has the square connector to the dynamo, so I had to replace with the more common rectangular plug style. The rest of this dash harness seems to fit and connect right, there is just the extra CL wire.

So I think I just need to make a new wire to connect the blue/white to the fuse box.

Now my fuse box I have not seen anywhere else. It has the connector config of the 65-67.5 but it does not have the center screw for the dust cover, just like the 65 1500!

What is your serial number? SPL310 xxxxx or SPL311?

Never mind I see it above.

So it should be negative ground with a VGR for the gauges.

I have two old 66-67 engine harnesses and one new. One old one has the blue/white wire and one does not. The new replacement harness I bought from Rallye does not.

When I got it I figured what they did on some was splice the blue/white wire directly to the wire coming from starter.

So there is one of two ways to fix or make it work. Run a blue/white wire from the fuse box and tape it to the harness. Or you can make a connector that hooks the blue white wire together with the green/white wire. This second option gives you an unfused CL.

If you want a wire made let me know, I'll make it up for you and send it.
