Removing Bezels from Gauges
Hi,
trying to restore some gauges on my 66 Roadster and just seeking any tips on how to remove the bezels? I am a bit gun-shy and don't want to crack the lens or bezel

Send them Jon Frampton. They will come back looking brand new, and you’ll never have to worry about them again.

I don’t see him on the vendor list, which is somewhat amazing. He’s done dozens and dozens of instrument restorations. Someone will chime in shortly with his contact info I’m certain.

He cuts them off, but you wouldn't notice because it's on the underside or backside. He does a great job restoring these tough gauges.

Interesting, the guy that did my amp gauge conversion has some kind of tool to remove them whole.

Re: Removing Bezels from Gauges
Interesting. I've seen some people try to bend the back portion of the bezel to remove it, but they always end up bending or creasing the ring. Never looks right again. But there are some talented folks out there too.

He would not tell me exactly how they did it except we have a tool.

Some may say Jon's work is expensive.
Sure, it ain't cheap, but well reasonable - and you get real roadster porn back - even a working clock!!
Well worth the bucks. There are some craftsmen out there that just get it done.

Re: Removing Bezels from Gauges
I have two tachometers. One has a rusted out bezel and the other a broken needle. I tried to take off the rusted bezel for a swap but, Man, really hard not to ruin it. Wonder how he cuts it off. Dremel? I may give it a go.

What about using dry ice to shring the housing? Ive been amazed at how muchmetal will contract when chilled.

Re: Removing Bezels from Gauges
Jons work is top notch. Expensive, na, considering the work involved and craftmenship. He is happy to change the face of a guage to read what you would like, I had my fuel guage upped to read a bigger (litre) tank I plan.
Jon cuts the bezel off in a lathe, and I bet there is a lot more in setting up to get that to work.
