Oil filter question

Post by mblue97 »

So I was using a Wix filter on my 1600 but just changed the oil and thought I'd try the Nissan filter. Anyway, I noticed the Nissan filter doesn't have an anti drain back valve like the Wix does. Considering the orientation of the filter, do you think it's smarter to go back to the Wix or am I worrying for nothing?

The original filter set up had a tube that fits inside the filter to keep some oil in there. I removed the tube when trying the mobile 1 filter, which is supposed to have a anti drain back valve. This resulted in a lot of chain rattle on start up, indicating it was having to fill the filter before the rest of the system. You can get rid of the rattle with shims (U20) but the system is still not getting oil there as fast it seems. That's a big deal when you have a cam spinning on a pad. I went back to the stock filter and used the tube... no problem.

I remember that tube on my 69 2000. Not sure if the 1600s (which I have now) ever had one, but mine doesn't. That's why I was wondering if it made more sense to switch back to a filter that had the anti drain back valve. It seems to make sense to me but wanted to hear from others too.

I hear you on that. The mobile 1 anti drain back simply did not work. I've used wix filters before with the tube so I can't comment on theirs. But now I have a supply of several Hastings that I got for a good deal, using the tube.
