Electronic Ignition

Post by car_cursed »

Hoping someone can point me in the right direction. My 1500 started acting up last might and I think the coil and or other parts of the ignition are going out. I would like to just go ahead and replace the whole lot. Now the tricky part. I believe the car has already been "upgraded" to a 1600/200 distributor. The info from the tag on the distributor is below. What company makes a electronic ignition that still allows me to keep my positive ground system?

I don't think you will find a positive ground electronic ignition but don't take my word for it. If your distributor . Is already updated to a 1600 type, parts are pretty easy to source and not that expensive....or are you wanting to upgrade to electronic ignition?

How was it acting up? Maybe we could help narrow down the symptom and problem?

Alright, I had some time to test things. The coil shows resistance of 4-5 ohm, the resistor block shows 8 ohm. I had spark first time I checked, but now, not at all. I am getting fuel so it's somewhere in the ignition system.

A new coil is only $14, so I will start there.

If you Google positive ground electronic ignition you will find several candidates.

Looks like the Pertronix 1741 should work.

New coil is in, still no spark. Got confirmation from Pertronix that the 1741 will work, so ordering that, new wires, cap, and condenser. If this doesn't work I'll take it to JDM Legends to troubleshoot.

does your coil have a ballast resistor installed internally, if so no need to use the external one!

There's an external one on it. I need to borrow a wire from my bug to verify spark from the coil since my cap and plugs seem to be fairly integrated.

If you have no spark, a Pertronix may not fix it.
Better to trouble shoot with voltmeter tofind the problem and then install the Pertronix.
The Pertronix replaces the points but if no spark at the points, the Pertronix wont likely fix it.

Okay, I'm not getting anything from the coil either. Where should I look?

Check to see if coil leads are correct, that is voltage at pos and ground at neg.

This happened suddenly everything seems correct. I am getting an occasional spark, could it be the condenser is dead, not sending signal to the coil?

Definitely a condenser can and will screw up spark at the points, but should not effect voltage at the coil. It's a cheap replacement and I would do that just to rule it out.

It was the condenser, put a new one on and it fired right up. I'll still be putting in the Pertronix though since it just got delivered.
