Dash Subharness

Post by Curtis »

Doing a new round of building harnesses for owners. Had a request/question about building one like Spreabury did for the SR20 conversion. So I'm mocking up one that can be installed on the dash before you install it like he did. Plug it in to the main harness and you're done. At the bottom of the dash is the main harness.

This one is being designed to work with the ATO fuse box conversion.

Does this depend on what style gauges you go with? What is the lead time? I'd love more details, as I will need that for my SR20 swap. I haven't decided which route on gauges but I'd love to buy a plug and plug dash harness that is super clean. Count me in and put me in the queue.

Got the harness all laid out. This is for a stock 66-67 roadster. Well mostly stock. I plan to use it in my car which has a volt meter and of course will have the ATO fuse box. I can make it for the stock fuse box and ammeter.

That looks pretty nice Curtis. It almost makes me want to take my dash out.

Thanks. I wish I could claim the credit but that goes to Spreadbury for giving me the idea after someone asked if I could do it.

I'm interested. I have Classic Instruments gauges in my 66 low windshield car, I would like to have everything working as original.
Will be pulling the dash but before I do I need a list of parts and a price for your harness.
Maybe just PM me and we can discuss details offline?
Thanks!

Very nice Curtis. Do you have any of your engine compartment harnesses still available for a early, 1965-67, 1600?

My question is about the dimming rheostat and how to deal with that piece of it.
First, should I try to recondition it, or replace it? Are they normally in good shape? Are they available new? I want the dash out of the car a minimum number of days.
Second, how is it wired up? I'm assuming toggle switched 12V in, and the output wire goes to ALL the gauge lights. Thanks!

Power for the dash light gauges comes off the tail light wire from the switch. Goes to the rheostat and then to the lights. I have to say I have never actually tried to use it to dim since the stock light bulbs are so dim anyway. I just put some LED bulbs in the tach lights.

I finally got my dashboard project done. I went with Classic Instruments gauges and sourced a sub-harness from them as well. It greatly simplified the connecting of all the gauges, with the added benefit of being able to test everything on the bench.
Best part was dropping it in and plugging in the Molex connector and everything worked!
I'll post some pics in the photo gallery and link here as soon as I figure out how to do that. :-)

I went so far as to resize the clock hole which is too big for a standard 2 1/8” gauge.
I’m such a geek when I get details focused...
