tonneau cover snaps / grommets

Post by onsight512 »

I pulled the tonneau cover out for the first time last night and noticed that it fits well everywhere except at the front of the doors.

Is it possible to change out the snap/grommet on the cover, or would it be better to change the attachment on the car?

And what's the best thing to clean these with? I'm guessing it's some sort of canvas?

It's simple, and probably easier to replace the grommet on the top. Just unfold those 4 metal tabs and remove, and replace with the correct style grommet.

Are those attachment points easy to find? Im about to get a tonneau cover and my dash is missing the attachment points and the single stub mounting point on the doors is also MIA

Your tonneau probably shrunk. I'd suggest
scrubbing it with soap and water then hosing it off and letting it warm in the sun to stretch it.
Then a thorough application of Aerospace 303 vinyl cleaner and conditioner if the material is vinyl. You might be able to get it to fit, once you get the parts to match.
Installing a postie was an adventure, limited space

Datsunparts has those parts.

Does anyone know where I’d source a grommet to fit one of the ‘twisties’?

I would ask here to see if anyone has left overs from their installation. I know I HAD extra lift-a-dots, but not sure on Twistie's

It will work and may be easier to replace the tonneau postie grommet, but that is the correct part. Your twistie on the outside of the wing window is not the correct part and should be a postie.

I can set you up with the correct dash twisties. Mine are used, black, with the long mounting studs, think I have the ones for the doors also. Yours shipped for $25 donation to 311s. Pat

Thanks. I’ll replace the twisty with a postie.

My suggestion on changing the grommet was based on ease, and reversibility. You can swap out lift-a-dot for grommet, and back, without having to dismantle the door and get to that impossible to reach twisty! :-)

After you have done one, you know why that makes sense!

Yes, it would be easier to swap the tonneau grommet. I like to do things the way they are supposed to be, even if it is more work. I have removed/installed those posties and it is a pain. It helps to put some grease on your finger to hold all the hardware that needs to go on.
