If you find an original 2L starter with low miles they hold up very well/can last for years.

The quality and life expectancy with remans is all over the map as this thread probably illustrates.

I see part of the splash shield has been removed. Tight squeeze. Hope they get it back to you quick.

Prob not ring gear (lets hope not otherwise the engine is coming out) since it engages each time as Curtis noted. Most likely the starter itself- drive/solenoid whatever, the only reasonable fix is to swap it. j
J, I have seen this condition a few times. I believe that it is only on older starters with a Bendix drive. I have a 1961 Ford farm tractor that will do it sometimes when it hasn't been started in a few months. As you noted the starter is engaging the flywheel because you can see the fan turn. The problem is that the motor will fire once or twice which causes the Bendix to release. A new starter may cure it but there is still a starting problem with fuel, spark, compression, or timing.

I do think this is specific to the starter. The starter should crank the engine as long as you hold the key to start until it or the battery dies.

The engine kicking over or starting doesn't really cause the Bendix to retract, only moving the key to "on" (which cuts the power to the solenoid) allows the Bendix to return- that's it. If the driver holds the key to "start" the solenoid should be trying to shove the Bendix drive into the ring gear no matter what- which is why you get the clashing of gears when the engine is already running. Pretty sure if he swaps the starter he'll be set. Let us know//

Does this starter have brushes? What if the brushes get stuck?

It does. If it were a brush problem the starter motor would probably not run, might run slowly or sluggishly, might arc internally, burn up or smell burnt, run erratically or have poor torque from poor brush contact. The brushes are designed to always securely contact the commutator constantly by spring force.

From listening to the video, sounds to me like the motor is running reliably,(pretty sure I hear it after the engine stops turning, and it starts every time he hits the key) but the Bendix has failed, or perhaps the lever that engages it is damaged. To me it sounds more mechanical than electrical. The solenoid is clearly functioning since it "makes" the cranking circuit causing the motor to turn. j

And the saga continues.. can't wait to see the resolution of this . This starter issue made it so we couldn't meet up and make a swap of parts last weekend :-(.

Spoke to the NAPA auto in Napa, CA and they should have sent it out yesterday, maybe today... I also ordered that heat shield stuff Greg posted on page one. I think in addition to wrapping part of the header, I will put a 3x12 section on the exhaust that goes right under my butt

I got my "new" starter back yesterday and I will get it installed probably Sunday after my summer school finals are over... However, I just wrote some feedback on Napa Auto parts' website and my finger hit delete instead of enter to submit and it deleted all of it. Im ready to throw my computer off the 13th floor. :smt076
