If it were the solenoid it wouldn't spin the starter. This sounds like the starter is spinning, but the gear isn't engaging the flywheel. I've never taken a gear reduction starter apart, but either something internal has failed and doesn't push the gear out to drive the flywheel, or, something has happend to the ring gear on the flywheel.

Sorry, I find modern engine swaps revolting. Keep your G, R, or U series in your Roadster!

I thought the solenoid is what pushed the gear out and then back in?

In the video the starter seems to engage for a bit then kick out. Seems like something going on with the solenoid. No matter what a pain if the splash panel isn't removed to deal with it.

IMHO, That is not a bad solenoid. Its either the Bendix drive or the lever arm.

Usually the Bendix drive fail slowly, in that they catch less and less while if the arm breaks or comes dislodged the starter no longer works.

It could be in the gear reduction, but that is rare

Honestly, I've never seen that particular failure mode. Prob not ring gear (lets hope not otherwise the engine is coming out) since it engages each time as Curtis noted. Most likely the starter itself- drive/solenoid whatever, the only reasonable fix is to swap it. j

Ok, looks like my luck got me and Im replacing the entire starter again. Luckily NAPA auto parts will warranty it, however my local store wont and I have to send it back up to NorCal to the original store I bought it from and they will warranty it. I just hope this whole thing doesnt take a month and Im finishing the car the night before Im supposed to drive it to an event... already done that once this year haha

I would call the corperate office.....that's not resonable. Why deal with a "National" brand company if that is ture.

apparently the local store only offers a 1 year warranty on the part but the store I bought it from offers a lifetime... local store also says the starter is NLA

Ebay is full of them. Nine tooth Nissan H-20 forklift gear reduction starter. Not the H-20-II.

The situation at the time of purchase was that we needed one ASAP and the local store had it available, so it was purchased.

I have to decide either to take the warranty or spend more money. I think I will take a free replacement and hope the one I got was a dud. If it craps out in a year, well... at least this thread will provide a link to one that apparently hasnt given anyone else trouble

My philosophy is on several parts is have a spare. The starter is one of those. I have probably 4 1600 and 2000 original starters around. Going to buy another gear reduction starter. Also keep a couple spare alternators.
