Jacking idea

Post by theunz »

I recently purchased one of these to use to jack up my 1969 Porsche 911s because I did not like the idea of jacking on a near 50 year old magnesium engine case in order to raise the car. Not to mention a used case will set you back about $10,000 AND drop the value by about 20 or 25 percent since it is no longer a numbers matching car. Just one of many reasons for my sig line at the bottom of my posts! Anyhow this simple part works amazingly well, and allows you to safely lift one side at a time by using a floor jack and having no fear of the factory jack slipping and then damaging your door.
While this piece does not quite fit the Datsun jacking channel it could be easily modified to do so. Better yet a GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR A VENDOR TO CUSTOM MAKE ONE as it is nothing more than a 1/4" flat disk welded to a peice of solid bar stock and than power coated. The only difficulty would be in getting the bar stock ground or machined to fit the crowned shape for the Roadster. The Porsche part sells for between 30 and 40 dollars, shipping included. So...JT this seems right up your alley!!

Our Datsuns are different than a Porsche in that we have a frame to distribute the load. Jacking channels have a bad habit of collapsing on 50 year old cars. You think slipping and damaging the door is a fear, think about the whole rocker collapsing.

You make a valid point Phil, and this would be a bad way to find out your rockers were badly compromised. However, the cars were designed to be able to lift an entire side with the jacking channels and I suspect that most are still strong enough to do so.

The real problem with the roadster jack socket is that it is round. having one of these items (that is slipped into the car socket when needed, not welded?) is that it will allow the detail and jack to swivel in the same way.
Like Phil said, we have a "big and strong, can't go wrong" frame underneath, and the scissor lifts that were std equipment in Datsuns in the 70's-80's work great, are cheap and plentiful and fit well in the trunk. (they provided chcoks in those kits, so grab those too)
For home/garage jacking, I found (as have many) that the up-facing "cup" on the cheapest hydraulic jacks fits almost perfect on the downward facing flared hole on the frame X-member gusset, locking the jack to the frame and permitting the jack to "walk in under" as it should when the car is raised. This jack point also raises both ends of the car - so make sure you chock on the other side, that is important.
