Oil Pan Gasket
Just picked up a new oil pan gasket from Dean, looks like install is pretty straight forward. Any input on if I need to use any gasket sealant, and what the torque specs are roughly. Thanks. Appreciate any tips
Doing the valve cover gasket after that. Same question do I need a gasket sealant. Thanks!

Re: Oil Pan Gasket
Dean recommends perm-a-tex #2 non hardening sealer for the pan.
If you have a U20 than only use sealer inside the grove that attaches to the valve cover.
Not familiar with the R16 so can't help there.
Always helpful to list your model and location in your sig.

Re: Oil Pan Gasket
I have always used Permatex High Tack aerosol sealer for that type of application. It will not harden, and as an aerosol it is easy to get an even light coat. I apply to the pan side only, so that when I need to renew the gasket, or just check the bottom end I don't have to lie under a motor that is dripping oil on me while I scrape the old gasket off. The can has a pic of a valve cover on it.

Re: Oil Pan Gasket
+1 to the above, exactly how I do it. Wherever possible I only add a sealant to one side of a gasket, the one on the part that comes off and is most easily accessible.

Re: Oil Pan Gasket
Great thanks guys, I’ll do it that way. So it will provide a plenty good seal on the side without sealant?

Re: Oil Pan Gasket
I use the spray on tack sealant on the pan side to. It also keeps gasket in place during install. Haven't had a leak yet.

Re: Oil Pan Gasket
I glue the gasket to the pan with Perma-tex yellow weather strip adhesive and the blue or ultra-blue on the block side. This allows the pan to be removed and reinstalled without damaging the gasket.

Re: Oil Pan Gasket
I have never bothered to torque an oil pan. The screws need to be tight but not so tight as to deform the gasket. You should go around at least twice and use a sequence kind of like you do torquing a head.

Re: Oil Pan Gasket
I suggest some blue locktite on the pan bolts. Mine would regularly loosen before.

Re: Oil Pan Gasket
You may want to check the mating surface of the oil pan with a straight edge. My pan had dimples from over tightening and I had to hammer them flat.
