1600 early / late water pump interchangabilty?

Post by funkaholik »

Hi all. After some false starts, I'm determined to get my '70 1600 back on the road after 20 years (!) of storage. My original engine had lots of blowby when parked & the rear seal leaked badly. I have a running, early 1600 engine (R25852) I can swap in for now while the 1970 engine gets slowly rebuilt. Here's my question:

The later engine uses a 1" spacer behind the water pump, and the early engine does not. Can I swap the spacer, later pump, crank & pump pulleys, and drivers side alternator onto the early engine so that the fan is close enough to the radiator, and my alternator sits where it should and plugs right back in? Does anyone know if this will / won't work on the early block? Any advice appreciated.

Thanks!

Yes, if you swap it all over, it will work.
