Removal of pin which hold lever to the rod allows a bit more clearance. In either direction. Pin is absent in photo

Thanks everyone for the help, we got it in by putting it in 4th gear, slid right in!!

And for those in the future that encounter this - the 'screw' is NOT. It's just for positioning the hole for the PIN..
