installing stock 70 1600 motor in 67 1600 PLEASE HELP

Post by Datsun AshLee »

Hi everyone, We just pulled my old motor out of my 67 1600 and am replacing it with a 70 1600 motor and trans. the 70 has a trans mount cross member that you have to remove to get the motor out, well we put the mount (not the cross member) back on the trans so the 2 stationary bolts can go into the holes on the 67 frame ( does this make any sense?) anyway we're trying to put the motor in and it seems those 2 bolts on the trans mount are hanging up and we can't get the motor in far enough. Does anyone have any idea of what to do?

To clarify, in the referenced drawing nelow you are referring to items 26-30 and 12-15??
http://www.carpartsmanual.com/datsun/sp ... e-mounting

The transmission rubber mount has two holes through which you bolt it to the transmission and then there are TWO captive bolts that bolt to the cross member, which it self bolts to the chassis/frame with SIX bolts.

So, if I understand you correctly, you have the tranny mount attached and you cannot get the engine in??

Are you using a leveller??

A lot of the time, I just have to press down on the rear of the assembly, or perhaps in your case the front, just to get those mount bolts to clear, and hopefully you have someone to push the hoist

I have not found an 'easy' way to attach the mount after getting the engine positioned.

HTH

BTW on the 70 transmission you will find TWO switches - ONE is for the backup lights, the OTHER is for some mysterious (mostly abandoned) smog thingie for the later cars.

The backup is probably in the same place as your 67. you can ignore the other one.

I have a metric motor and transmission in my 67. I find it best to put the engine and transmission in without the transmission mount on it. I put it on afterwards since it likes to hang up on stuff. Others will have different opinions and methods.

ok...yes I have a leveler on it and we took off the mount items 12-15 and now the gear shift linkage is hitting a metal plate that is right before the hole in the that the gear shift handle goes through, the 70 didn't have that plate. Is the trans linkage taller on the 70 trans?, because we didn't have any problem getting the 67 motor and trans out, or can I just cut that cross plate out of there without messing anything up?

If you take the pin out of the linkage (remove and store carefully the pin and cir-clip) I think you can get tranny in without removing the plate.
Getting the engine and tranny out is easier :D . I think the linkage is the same though for all.
With the pin out its easier to move the stuff out of the way.

It was still a bit tricky maneuvering though (IIRC it was done in August of 2017, many beers ago).
I have a circa 70's header on my motor and with the header and carbs etc attached it was a real bear to install,as the header did not want to clear the frame !$%*!!. Since then I've been told to loosen the header and then wire it to the motor down low and it will clear.

You shouldn't need to disassemble the shift linkage. I put it in second or fourth to reduce the height, but it should slip right in. It takes some jiggling, but it will go.

No need to take that off. If you rotate it a left or right it will clear it.

But it’s easy to remove and replace, and a roadster aficionado on the west coast recommend I remove it. To each their own.
Just talking about removing the pin, maybe after you put it fourth gear you won’t need to.

Someone who I suspect has done a lot of roadster engines suggested I do this so I did.

Wish I’d have thought about fourth gear suggestion too. Not all setups have the same clearances as I was able to do mine long ago headers and all with ease. (Car flat on the ground and commalong on the roof). Now with a different setup (car on jackstands in front) clearance was not so great and it took my wife and 2 hours to get the engine in (was headed and car angle issue).

Just saying

Once it is in the car how hard is it to put it back on? Of course now I have to go look at the tranny sitting out.

I pull it and put it back in with both manifolds and the solexes on it. I drop the tranny crossmember and leave the linkage sans the shifter. I’ve done it at least 8 times both R and U 20. Most of the times by myself. You just have to go slow and pay attention.

It’s a pin and put it trough easy. Put a dab of weatherstrip cement on the cir clip to align in groove. Push with screwdriver.

I too have done it many times without removing pin. But still depends on angle.

If I can get a nut and bolt in there (per tech wiki) the pin and cir-clip is easier. I dropped my cir-clip once which is why a dab of weatherstrip helps there.

Of course I know you have new era headers. Makes all the difference in clearance. Old style from 70’s can be a real pain of car can’t be pushed on tires.

I must be doing something wrong! I always pulled the shift lever off from inside the car.
Never occurred to me to have that long piece sticking up, but I am usually doing it by myself or with my Dad (99 years 6 months old).

Yes, pull the lever, but not the shifter that it bolts through
