choke sticking open

Post by oppositeLock »

The setup: I have a carb pulled part, bell and piston removed, replacing the nozzle. The fuel line to the float bowl is not connected. So the nozzle should slide smoothly in its sleeve, which it does when not connected to the choke arm.

The problem: When the choke arm is attached to the nozzle and I extend the nozzle with the choke lever it won't return when I release it. It feels like the choke arm is not pushing inward enough so the nozzle binds up. If I push lightly inward on the arm it retracts pretty smoothly. I've cleaned the choke arm, spring, etc but have not disassembled it. I don't feel any play in the sleeve the nozzle slides in.

I have the same problem with both carbs. On a separate pair of spare / junk / totally dirty carbs, one of them binds up, while the other snaps right back. So this must be a common problem.

You are correct in that the choke arm can put a mechanical bias on the nozzle. Use needle nose pliers to gently remove the bias by bending the arm at the same points where you see bends now.

Be sure to put a little grease on the nozzle where it slides.

The nozzle may need to be centered by loosening the nut above the spring just at base of body. Looking straight down into the carb you can see if you're centered or off.

Iirc, the arms are slightly different from the 90 degree jets to the 180

Lubed all of the linkage pivots and the nozzle shafts with LockEase (graphite-based spray) and they now retract great! I didn't have to bend anything, which I was reluctant to do.

That's good new. Suggest you actuate a numbdr of times and see if there is any "witness marks" in the lube just to be sure jets sre centered and no bias. Juxt to save some rework down the road as the lube dissipates with time.
