High Charging Current

Post by Jdflyer »

Hi Everyone,

I am wondering if I might need a new battery. I replaced my headlights, added fog lights and added all of the relays and support harness that I need. Also insured that there is no battery drain (00.0 mA) when the car is off and the key is out.

So I just got home and the car hasn't run in 5 days.
Battery voltage ~11.3V

Engine running @ 2500 RPM
Battery Voltage 14.2V

However, the amp gauge is almost pegged at 30 (probably about 28).

Last week after I finished all the work installing the new lights I had to jump start the car (no surprise there) and then I took the vehicle for a 45 min. drive. The amp meter at idle was about +8A and then during the 45 min drive it remained at ~28-29A when above idle. It did not mater if the headlights were on or not. When I finished the drive that evening the battery was at ~12.4V.

I did have to relocate the voltage regulator forward about 6 inches. I've checked and cleaned the grounds.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Sounds like a bad battery, but its possible its just not charged. It would be best to get a smart charger and Charge the battery slowly overnight. Check the voltage in a few days. It should be above 12.4 after several days.
If its not a daily driver, charge the day before you plan on driving her.
