I'm reworking my lighting circuits, trying to get ready for Solvang in 2 weeks and have a quick question

Hi/Low Switch

Does it connect to ground when the high beams are on or off.

Follow up question. Are the high beams on when the turn signal is futherest from the driver or closest. The owners Manual contradicts itself between the text and diagram.

hi beam is furthest.
You can always switch the wiring at the connection to the headlights, easiest, rather than messing with the wiring at the other end, only possible problem is that the hibeam light might be in opposition to reality.

The manual is not correct. It states that high is toward the steering wheel. Once again Datsun recycled some text and picture.

I just hooked up the turn signal and relay to power to confirm this. When the low beams are on the relay is also on. Clicking the stalk forward turns off the relay and the high beams come on. I use a tail light hooked up to it to make sure.

OK. Thanks Curtis, that really helps. I thought the switch would have grounded when the highbeams where on not off. So now my switch works backwards, for now...

I've found on my '69 that when the wire in the relay breaks, it defaults to high beam. The lever goes forward for high beams.

If you look at the switch the contact comes away from the plate when it is pushed forward breaking the ground connection. Verified by visual inspection and a volt ohm meter.

If you want to switch the function of your switch all you have to do is change the position of the two headlight wires at the connector on the engine harness to the relay.

I should have said, high beams are a normally open switch, whereas the lows are switch closed. When the wire breaks on the back of the relay, (I'm guessing its a ground) the high beams stay on.
