Brake upgrades

Post by Datsun2000steve »

I was hoping to upgrade the front calipers on my 68 Roadster. I'm intending to go with a 4 pot aluminium caliper from Wildwood and I was hoping someone may be able to advise me on a direct bolt on product or adapters required of the job. I'm running a DBA 610S rotor and am using 14" wheels.
Thanks for your help.

I'm getting ready to do an upgrade on my 69. I will run modified stock rotors with 240 Volvo 4 piston calipers. As I understand it. The diameter of the stock rotors needs to be reduced by 1/8th inch then the mounting holed in the Volvo calipers needs to be enlarged to 1/2" . They then bolt directly to the stock mounting location. There are some plumbing changes to be done . They are minor.

Thanks Boxcar.
I'm familiar with this modification, but choosing a lighter rotor to decrease unsprung weight.

My DBA list does not cover #610....Stock rotor
What are the specs. for that rotor?.....never mind.
There is no direct fit caliper from Wilwood or most other aftermarket suppliers.
Its very easy to make a 3.5" spacing bracket using the stock bracket that's 3" caliper spacing. Also the bracket can be made from a piece of 3/8 or 8-10mm stock.

If you are looking for light weight and fitment under 14" wheels.
consider Wilwood Ultralite HP 30 Vane Rotor 160-5839
10.75 x 0.81 and 7.4 lbs. You would have to make and aluminum spacer/adaptor
rotor side center hole 3.0" PCD of 4x114.3 holes 7/16"
Disc side

Rotor Bolt Circle (in):
6 x 6.25
Rotor Mount Hole Size (in):
0.326
Lug ID / Registration (in):
5.59
Far Side Inside Diameter (in):
7
Offset Dimension (in):

Thickness TBA

How much unsprung weight? By the time you add all of the extra brackets adapters and spacers your savings may be negligible...

Say that after you lift your boat anchor of a caliper. I am not going to drag one out to weight it, buy my guess is its over 10 lbs.

The volvo calipers are super heavy, the Wilwoods are very light :-).. The dba610s is the slotted version of the DBA oem replacement rotor correct? I have CNC machined mounts for the wilwood 4-pots for both a stock rotor and a vented rotor, but have not sold them commercially.

The one gotcha I noted is that with the stock diameter rotor 11.25", the factory steelie wheels rub on the calipers. 14" Libre's clear tho!

Thanks everyone.
A tonne of info coming in.
Willing to forgo rotor weight for efficient, tough and durable like the DBA stuff: relatively inexpensive also.
The calipers and the fitment are the issue.

Thanks JT.
I'm running 14" CSS aluminium wheels: I like 'em and don't want part with 'em......keeps the costs down.
I'd be interested in the type of Wildwood caliper and the cost of fabricating the bracket. Or, alternatively, I purchase the template and get it made here.
BTW, are you happy with your caliper conversion?

G'day Kevin,
I can't see your post on the forum but your message came through my email.
I had a pair of Commodore calipers, got 'em for nothing, but the weight and the fact they were a sliding caliper turned me off.
You're happy with the results?

The Volvo calipers are listed at 10 Lbs each. Im not knocking the wild woods. I run them on my Vett. But as I understand it , they change the off set of the front end. I prefer a more direct fit.

Thanks Boxcar.
The Wilwoods are rated about half that(?) (whatever a pound is).

Here is a picture of Michael's 300ZX kit. The pieces for wildwood calipers would be similar.

Thanks Phil,
I have seen those....for the 300zx caliper upgrade if my memory is correct.
I actually have the opportunity of grabbing a pair of 300zx aluminium calipers for not very much.
