Steering column rubbing on carborators float chamber

Post by Ecar510 »

So I’ve been trying to get my roadster tuned up and running for spring and summer and noticed that my steering column is rubbing on my carbs float chamber. I’m worried it will rub a hole into it as I drive. I checked the motor mounts, but they are fine and in good shape not sagging. So does anyone have other ideas, or know what the issue might be? I was thinking of raising the engine slightly but the fan would hit the cover. Images attached are of the carb floater cover touching the steering rod, and a picture of the transmission mount.

Thanks!

What transmission do you have in the car? If a 5 speed on a 1600 I might suspect that you have the wrong transmission mount, as that will alter the engine position. In that instance however, the engine mounts look "strained" to the front of the car. Is the steering rod bent or show signs of damage?

heat shields are known to rub on the steering column. The 1600 rubber trans mount is nearly identical to the 2000 one, hole size is the only difference. Trans steel mount for 1600 is taller than 2000 one. Pictures might help show what is off.

It is the stock 4 speed, I believe the steering rod is not damaged. I will upload pictures soon. Thanks again

Motor mounting brackets may be swapped side to side

On the R16 doesn't the rear carb have the float bowl on the opposite side as the carb in the picture, could this be an L series carb on your engine or an L engine.

Starter is on the opposite side on an L, isn't it?

The carbs being incorrect is possible, when I bought the car the previous owner had said he put new carbs on it, maybe they got the wrong carbs for it. How could I tell? Is there any fix other than putting the correct ones on?

Pictures are worth a thousand words, so a few more of the Carb in particular would be helpful. From the one you have above, the float bowl does look different than stock.

Agree, bowls should be on the front side of both carbs.

Here are more pictures sorry for the delay thanks for all the help! I’ve been trying to figure out what could be causing it to rub, this makes the most sense.

Well I guess that’s good news and bad news. I now know what the Issue is, thanks for the help. Any thoughts on what i should do next? I might just run them the way it is until i can source a nice set of carbs. Any thoughts?
