Hazard Switch

In my ignorance, evidently I've installed a '68 under-dash wiring harness into a '69 Roadster. Up until now, and indeed I didn't know there was a difference until a couple of hours ago, there haven't been any issues; things plugged in where they ought to plug. Until, that is, I come to the hazard light switch. Seems that the '69 hazard switch has 9 pins while the '68 harness has 6. I've got a hammer and could make it fit but it probably wouldn't work. Oh, let's be honest, we know it wouldn't work. Do any of you have a suggestion short of removing the '68 harness and installing a '69?

Not sure if the switches can be rewired. Probably easiest to get a 68 switch.

could be an issue since the hazard switch also is part of the blinker circuitry!, but I would concur - find a switch that matches the wiring and hope for the best.

My 70 had a 69 loom installed (which made a difference in the hi/lo beam socket, so the enterprising 'restorers' just cut the wiring.

The turn signal switch should be different also.

IIRC the 68 does not have the brake failure light also.

I would suggest you get the correct wiring.

I think the 68 does have a brake failure light. At least it has a mystery switch that has a "B" on it. If you pull the switch it lights up. I think it also lit up once when I developed a leak in the line and the brakes failed. I did not need a ight to tell me, and I was a little preoccupied to notice it going on.
I think I would view the hazard lights as a desired but non essential accessory. In my "make it work" world, I would disconnect it and some day in the future depending on funds and inclination, put in the proper harness.

You can’t disconnect the hazard switch. Most electrical in the car runs through it and without it, that stuff will not work. The issue now is the 68 is different than the 69-70, so getting lights to work correctly will be tough unless you change it back to the 68 harness.

Look at the wiring diagrams in the tech wiki and you will see the “extra” 3 wires on the 69-70 actually go somewhere. If you want to use the harness as it sits, you need to change out the hazard switch, turn signal switch, rear tail lights, and front marker lights at a minimum.

I think your going to need a turn signal switch and 69/70 switch bezel as I think that’s different too. I recommend you reverse course because the fuse block is also different and the 69/70 harness was superior. Good luck!

I recall that the speedometer with the chrome bezel in the middle (68-69?) has a different hi/lo light retainer from the speedo with out (70 - fur sure at least)

There is No Way to use that harness without replacing the Headlight switch and relay also.
68 switches the Hot to the H/L and 69-70 switches the ground.

Just to follow up with this issue; I've discovered that the problem I had wasn't the wiring harness, it was the switch. The 9 pin that came with the car evidently was merely that: with the car; it didn't belong. After much weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth I purchased a 6 pin switch and attendant mini-harness and by golly most everything worked. Still some issues but nothing like there was before. In fact, after cleaning grounds and replacing a connector or two, I've got tail lights, parking lights, side marker lights and turn signals front and rear. No headlights but I think that's mostly because I can't find where I stashed the new headlight relay I bought a couple of months ago. posting.php?mode=reply&f=3&t=29785#

But all in all, life is better now and I've put away the 4 pound hammer that had been resting on the front bumper. Thanks for all the help guys.

68 and 69-70, never the two shall meet.... Gauges okay, sorta, everything else not.

Hazard, turn, light switches, S-brake light, high beam light socket, plastic vs. metal (different gauge socket). And of course the fuse box.
