2X what Greg said. Different issues. Ping can be thought of as many things I suppose, but over the last 50 years it usually refers to "preignition knock" which can be caused by carbon in the combustion chamber but is almost always caused by too much timing. My '67 1600 has had some head machining and she has domed pistons. When I took it for the first drive I had 93 octane gas in it, and it knocked (pinged) way too much when starting off with RPMs somewhat low. (which could be described as getting near lugging). I backed the timing off 3 degrees and that did the trick. I have to get close to lugging for it to knock now.
