Hi Dave,
I think .076 might be too far from the magic number .087. Your current .080 might be better. I think idle is always going to be rich with the stock needles. But the ADQ needles are better at idle. The real question is how does it go at running speed.....And plug color.
I currently have my carbs at.080 and I have nice power for my kind of around town driving. Idle is around 750-800. Of course the bushings are a little bit worn.
Interestingly I was talking to Skip Miller , today, (Miller Sports and Imports, Datsun mechanic from the beginning ,) and he asked what I did with the car recently, and I said slightly adjusted the carbs using the magic number method. He said back in the day they had a tool that would fit down into each carb so that you could match each carb, kind of like we are doing. Ha.
I will find out more about that tomorrow when I pick up my other car. :)
I added a Spectre air filter too so the air flow is better

Here's the tool Skip Miller was talking about that they used to center the nozzle and also set a starting point for the nozzle adjustment. How it works is you take off the dome, take out the Piston, then replace the dome. Take out the oil damper plunger, then put the tool down in the opening to center the nozzle. After that is done, flip the tool over to check for nozzle depth, then fine tune from there. Just looking at the near end of the tool it appeared close to the "magic number" and I wished I could have measured to see what it was. Skip said these were some of the special tools they were given to use at Datsun dealerships.

As I said, I don't know, wish I could have measured .

I like the concept of measuring the depth with a precision tool. Is there a similar specification for the needles? I thought I recalled that when I installed them, there was a depth adjustment. It would be good to know how to check this...

In the Tech Wiki the write ups talk about setting the needle, basically flush, then you can slightly bring it out to adjust idle.

So after a spirited test drive, I’m liking the 0.080 setting much better. Lots of pickup, no pinging and the idle is pretty smooth. I’ll stick with this setting for the summer. Now to adjust the clutch...it’s always something on these cars :) #StillEnjoyingTheDrive

I just did 0.087 + 1/4 turn leaner after Dave Premo rebuilt my carbs and it runs fantastic. (Keith's needles) Thanks Dave!

Would be interesting to know what a "1/4 turn" represents, and how matched the depth turned out to be.

Hey Linda how do you like the Spectre air filter? I also had one and installed it in my 1600 but I actually felt less power than with the stock new filter. Thanks!

Well the air filter I had was pretty dirty, so this one is an improvement!

Oh ok yeah that makes sense of course. I wasn't sure if you were comparing a new original filter to the Spectre. :)
