Yes, if the advance springs break or the mechanism is worn out/jammed up, yes, you could be in a full advance situation all the time.

The vacuum advance would only likely fail in "no advance" position.

If running a smog distributor without complete smog setup, you may have to much mechanical advance regardless..

I made a distributor wire for the ground inside the cap by points there on the plate and apparently there was metal in the cloth . so my sleeve of cloth got burnt or something and dropped shrapnel all inside there and it was sticking it open but not all the way and not always the same RPMs so it was kind of screwy.. not always cold not always hot it would ride high . I think it is fixed when I pulled it last night and cleaned it and stuck the old wire back on . and thanks for the lookouts you mentioned .

Sounds like ur distributor needs rebuilding. If the didtributor is flaky you engine will run erratically.

Its very important the wire you repaired/replaced be very flexible material. That's a very common mistake to replace it with a stiff wire which "locks" the point plate from moving which prevents the vacuum advance from functioning properly to not at all.

If you search the internet for "distributor plate ground wire" or go to you local Napa type auto parts store you should be able to find one that works or can be easily adapted.

The spring arm should not have popped off if the breaker plate is in good shape??? Very curious, never seen a need for this.

It might have come off because the plate could not move.
