clutch master?

Post by sevenmilebridge »

Have tried to get the clutch working on 1970 1600. Have rebuilt old master with no success. Replaced with a new master still can't get pressure to the slave cylinder. Any ideas as to what is going on?

Did you bench bleed or a like the MC?
Getting a full blast of fluid from the slave cly.?
Hose in good condition?
The slave piston maybe jamming too

I would try gravity bleeding first... open the slave bleeder and let the fluid from the master fill the slave and drip out for quite a while before starting to pump the master. For some reason I had the same issue until I used my vacuum bleeder system on the slave bleeder screw.
I think that it doesn't help that the slave bleeder is on the bottom of the cylinder and not the more logical top....as I recall.

By the way, remember when bleeding with the pedal, don't release the clutch pedal until your partner re-tightens the bleeder on the slave or else you will slurp air back into the slave.

If you use a speed bleeder on the slave you won't need a partner. Is the slave functional?

As I recall some year cars have clutch piping the runs up above the level of the reservoir so a gravity bleed won't work until fluid is on past the highest point.

As mentioned, bench bleed the master first. It should quickly fill the system if properly bled and you don't let the level drop below the minimum.

With the slave cylinder open, after just a few pumps you should get plenty of fluid down below. j

I think maybe the piston is getting stuck. I did gravity bleed and fluid drips out went through a couple of fillings so may have to take back out again. was working before i installed but just can't get pressure.

You bleed a clutch different than brakes. The usual method is gravity bleed, just fill the cylinder and open the lower valve. It should produce a small stream of fluid. Some times there is a high point and you need a siphon bleed. Here is the difference..... to start a siphon, connect a tube on the bottom bleed screw and insert the tube into a container containing some brake fluid. Open the lower valve AND DONT CLOSE IT. Now pump the system slowly a few times to fill the hose with fluid. Keep the reservoir full, you should start to get the fluid flowing after a few pumps.

Once you have flushed the system with a little fluid, tighten the bleeder and you should be good to go.
