69 U20/Solex Heater Installation

Post by MrGuts »

Hiya!

With the hot summer winding down, we've gathered the parts to reinstall a freshened heater assembly back into our 69 SPL1600 which as many are aware is fitted now with a U20/Solex. The Clymer manual I have shows nothing on the heater hoses, etc. my research has led me to gather the hose kits and proper nipples to install at the water pump and *perhaps* at the intake? Any photos from late model U20 owners that cn guide me on the connections in the engine bay?

Many thanks :Tosser: (fire breathing HEATER)

Nice!
I borrowed the alias for the car I campaigned in both US Gumball 3000 events. I actually was able to get a California plate MR GUTS.

I sold that 72 Torino to a fan of the car in Finland. I put the car on the carrier with the MR GUTS plate on it and kept one for myself. Maybe our roadster will wear the plate in Solvang '18 just so you all know it's me.

Got pulled over in Texas [1-0-5] during the event in 2003 and the trooper walked up to my window and said 'well, you're not Gary Busey.' I said, right! He was MR GUTS co-driver, I am Ace Preston! [Still got a ticket]

Thanks for the memory!

Think anyone will help me with this heater?

There are two fittings required on the solex intake, one on the pump. Conventional heater hose or formed hoses can be used, but you need the correct fittings - I manufacture them if you need them.

The hose coming from the rear of the water tube goes to the heater valve through a hole on the passenger side of the firewall tunnel. The hose from the front of the tube goes under the carbs and through the drivers side tunnel hole to the heater core return. If you don't have either of the fittings you will need to be sure to get the front specificity for the solex's as it is a little longer than the SU's fitting. The front is a offset t fitting where the straight portion goes to the water pump and the T off goes to the heater valve. You can use an SU T but it will not fit right. The rear fitting is the same as the ones on the water pump, but the front is a one off fitting, also they are some kind of funky thread so you can't just adapt some plumbing T. JT makes a Spot on replica of the original, so if you are missing it he's got you covered. If you buy the formed hoses from one of our vendors their routing will be self explanatory. Mike

Got the heater in and plumbed thanks to all the guidance in this thread and the good parts purchased.

Car came to us with heater out. Feel like I was missing something in the way of bracketry, so improvisation took over.

Thoughts?

That will work. Just needs to hold the heater up to meet the fresh air inlet and allow the lower door to open properly. There was a steel bracket there thst served the same purpose originally. Congrats on the new warmth. Very nice with all the frigid weather about!

Whoa Pat!
That is super generous. Thank you so much. I see how that will move the floor heat out around the center console. Ive been enjoying reading all the interaction within this great community which we are newlynpart of and it's this type outward generosity that makes it legit.

Thanks to Pat for the proper lower bracket. Have all the cable/lever controls in so this project continues.
Think a harness is missing from dash to center console where the fan speed switch is located. See pics. 1st pic is fan speed switch connector in center console. 2nd pic is all I have left from under dash.
Thoughts? And Thanks!
