So further to my suspected head gasket leak ( coolant overflow tank full an rad half empty). I decided to retorq the head and three of the head bolts turned maybe 30 degrees as I got up to 65 foot pounds. I guess that even if the loose head bolts may have caused a head gasket leak, the gasket is probably shot anyway and won’t seal even with the retorq

If you do have to replace head gasket, you might want to look into ARP studs ISO Bolts. Higher clamping, no 'erosion' on the engine threads, and when retorquing, you just torque - no loosen then tighten.

Different torque ratios for wet/dry installation - so watch out for that!

Can someone give me a template of where the OEM rear holes should be for the emblems? I spoke to Brian (bkippen) about it in Solvang and forgot to follow up, so Im opening it up to anyone who can help.

can you do a compression test with the carbs off , and intake ? using the kind that goes into each plug ? I'm wanting to pull the carbs but wanting to do compression test too . I have carbs dome pulled now and needles out is why I'm asking . keep going and pull it or put it put back together first /run test . ? it's all coming out . right down to my frankenheader .. I think it blew a seam or maybe my defect one I blew after 9 months blew another fresh hole . so it's repair time maybe . I see soot blowing where it shouldn't be . and I was told a few times ," so close to motor will fry your rings !" so it's time to pop it out and see what's up again . with my carbs basically never behaving right (and when I do get it set right , I have no idea what I just did to make it that way ,or just lucky ) , I'll hit those too and tighten up things to see if that's why it's so hard most of the time . impossible really . my holes look maybe too big inside the Piston area with the needle making a larger hole than these back up pieces I have for it .. if they'll even work . something's different about them also .

Having the carbs off should make no difference in a compression test because the test is supposed to be performed with throttles full open anyway.

Anyone? I was told theres an easy way to overlay something on that back panel to create a template I can use...

Do you have the emblem? Lay it on a piece of paper and poke the holes through -there's your template.

If you don't have the holes on the tail light panel I can give you those dims. but I don't know what emblem you are wanting to fit.

Theres no holes, they were welded up, and if Im drilling the holes, I want to make sure they are in the correct location. These are the larger 3 for the Datsun/ Fairlady badge.

Ive measured and eyeballed it, stood back and looked at it and I really dont want to drill into the panel unless Im 100% certain they are the right spots and straight. I only get one chance so I dont want to screw it up

That helps with the spacing, but thats not what Im worried about.

Im worried that after Ive drilled 3 holes in the back panel that its not level or in the correct location

2mAn wants a template that attaches to the car body work from a known point or two, so when the emblem holes are drilled, they are where they should be. Correct?
