I think you had it correct to begin with in the first pic, connecting left to right as noted in the diagram. So I would put it back that way and look elsewhere for your problem.
Fuse box checked?
Also you did not say if you cleaned inside the wire terminals. You can have them connected correctly but if it is corroded inside the vinyl then it will not work....

the blinkers work and so does the fog lights . then I turn on headlights and pop goes the fuse . the funny thing is they're not even plugged in because I have led coming in and wanted to get ready with the connections but it was doing this before I unplugged them . corrosion wouldn't fry the fuse though. AND I HAVE AN ALUMINUM GLOVE BOX COULD THAT BE SHORTING THE FUSE BOX?? OR IS THAT NORMAL ? ERGH I EVEN UNPLUGGED ALL MY ELECTRICAL TO MAKE SURE IT WASNT FROM ME .. . now I don't know what to do . I can't drive at night and I can't move forward with LEDs with this issue . I've looked around to find a exposed wire somewhere and I can't find one (this time) so I'm really baffled .

or up in dash . can u plug the switch in wrong ? wait fog lights work so probably not that . something I'm thinking up in dash . can u out in the dash lights wrong somehow ? that would short the entire system I'm wondering but doubt it but I'll look there too next .

From an earlier thread:
http://www.311s.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.ph ... ight+relay
And a current pic I just took:

So it looks like your original wire connections are different from mine, which is all working.
I would use the site wiring schematics rather than the book.
I also believe corrosion (resistence) can fry a fuse when energized if there is enough of it.
Check and clean the back of the fuse box at the headlight fuse especially .
The ground at the alternator needs to be clean also.

I do not like that wiring diagram.
the 68 custom Color Wiring Diagram in the WIKI show the terminals as D M S B Not D M B S
Are your terminals marked?

Lorna's headlight relay box is marked 1234, mine is the same.
I agree, much better wiring diagram, very helpful in the past! Thx again to contributors.

with the red wire fuse blowing each time lights are turned on . fog lights work fine until headlamps are energised

now tracing those two back / red wire and white with red on the fuse that's blowing , one goes to the gages where I put in LEDs and the other going to the cig lighter . I'll think I'll check these better too ...

I would clean the fuse box, you can soak it in vinegar and then rinse it. Be sure to take a pic or label wires.
Back to headlight relay. Strange but the black with red band is not in #1 position on the wiring diagram (#1 is the bottom position when box is mounted). Yet mine work...
