headlights relay wires

Post by Lorna c »

hey y'all . been a minute since I've needed help , an entire week haha, ok so I'm trying to put in led lights on the dash . got them all swapped out ,not easy btw which you already know . I've been searching for the wiring for the relay , found some and did it BUT they're still blowing my fuse when I try to put them on . I've had some issues with blowing fuse before, but it was random and I just carried plenty of fuses . but now I can't even get them to stay on . this is what I found in the discussion forum but it doesn't seem to be working on mine . so here's a picture of the relay& the wiring I found on here for a stock relay and it's different than how I had it before so me thinking it was going to work because of my past issues telling me something was wrong before . now I don't remember how I had it before and this doesn't work at all now so I'm kinda stuck .. does anyone see what is wrong please ?? it's nice at nite and I'd like to get my lights working again. oh , I only have the dash lights in with led so far . ** do ALL of those need to be plugged in for things to work ? so I know . and then we'll move on to the headlights themselves to make sure I put those wires correctly back together because the plugs are different from stock of course .. but need to get them working before I go there . so hopefully someone will see where I'm going wrong on this relay or is it something up in my dash blowing my fuse ? ok please please , been on this all week and no go still . thanks in advance. and yes I had the box grounded to car when I tried to turn them on .

Lorna, be sure the relay has a good ground by sanding the box and the car metal where it attaches. Then cleaning the tabs and spraying inside the wire terminals too, as a first try. If too corroded or broken , then must be repaired. I also opened the relay and cleaned inside, as I recall. There are tiny tabs which can break off, so do at your own risk, as they say lol. The hook up would be according to the wiring diagram.

the Dremel made short work of that . I opened up the relay last night and cleaned it good also and checked for it to be working properly all is well with it I believe . so wish me luck .. going to reassemble and check it . idk but I'm thinking it's up in the dash somewhere blowing my fuse . only when I was up changing to led I got this issue . but the wires on this relay I forgot and the book and the post I read on these wires are different than I had before but I don't remember how they went exactly now that they're clean I don't recognize them in memory . ergh .

nope . the amp meeter on dash flew to the far left all the way , and blew the fuse again :-( something is crossed or grounded now somewhere I'm thinking maybe ? man bummer . I hate electrical . a week I've been fixing this and that mainly my doing fixing that and I create another issue by an exposed wire or something . this is very tedious work.. I think my relay is wrong also this fuse is truly blown the others just kind of barely popped apart ..

I assume you used the electronic spray inside the wire terminals. I also sprayed inside the box.
Checking your fuse box for corrosion is a good idea too, corrosion can hide on the underside, and rivets, prongs can be loose.
These basic cleaning steps have been helpful to me. You may have to trace each wire though if this does not work.
Plus you have to connect the wires correctly, of course.

I'm thinking I'm getting this wrong still . it doesn't make sense but all stock . so if the coil looking thing in the diagram is the coil wrapped in green on relay then the prongs to set on the wires are backwards to book rite ??
