Plastic cooling fan size?

Post by itsa68 »

I'm thinking of changing from the stock 1600 12 inch blade metal cooling fan to a plastic one.
Does anyone know what the dimension is for the replacement plastic one is by chance?

I have a 13" four blade plastic one available , but I'm thinking it might be a little large for the rad shroud.

Thanks in advance

Just my opinion but why not go thermo electric?
You can save HP and wear and tear on your engine.
I used an industrial thermal sensor to switch the fan on, no relay required.

That's an option I may consider.

I'd recommend it, seriously. It can be either push or pull, thermostatically controlled. I fitted one in addition to the stock metal fan, just for appearances. Now I know if things get out of hand I have that insurance of the extra cooling feature. It is powered direct from the battery so it will continue to run until the coolant temperature drops to a reasonable value.

I have a 4 blade plastic and it's 14 inches across. It fits fine in my shroud the shroud is 15.5".
Mine is not your normal 1600 though. My metal fan broke apart long ago and put holes in the radiator

+ 1 on Nissanman's tip on the electric fan, I've had mine longer than he's had his!
But I did add a thermal control based on his fine advice

I wonder if there is a way to smoothly cut the fan down. I would check with a plastics supply co since they cut pieces for sale.

I just swapped to the plastic fan a couple months ago. I was considering going electric but I'm assuming that would imply swapping to a higher-current alternator since an electric fan pulls 10+ amps. BTW, if you buy the spacer for the plastic fan, ask if it's drilled for both sets of holes (diameter, center-to-center...matching the fan you have). If not, ask what the diameter between opposing holes is...you may have to get the spacer drilled for the other set to match your water pump. If you have to drill for the second set, consider taking the spacer and fan to a machine shop to make sure it's spot on...you only get one shot at it.

Regardless of which you way you go, remove the radiator...it just makes everything easier. Or you can bend a bunch of fins first...then remove the radiator to make everything easier. :D

Hey Spyder, what size and make flex fan did you buy? Is it still intact ( no cracked blades )? I want to replace my OEM 7-blade ( locked ) fan before I install my new water pump.

I measured it, it's 13 inches and I see no cracking. Plus I run it up to the redline of 8000 rpm frequently.
