Timing retards the same if hooked up to vacuum or not. The vacuum line is going to the carburetor. I will try reversing polarity this afternoon. Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions and help.

I would be glad to put it on the distributor machine to sort it out/verify proper function if I can assist.

Eureka!!!!!!!! It works, it's alive, reversed the polarity and it works like a champ. I especially want to say thank you to Tom at East Coast roadster he has been more than helpful and understanding with this problem. Thanks to everyone else for all your help, couldn't have done it without you.

I also extend my thanks! I still don't understand why reversing the polarity of the module works, but I will add it to my list of things to try in the future. There must be something with the field coil, or planet alignment, or the way I hold my tongue or.......

Flux capacitor needs to be re calibrated and aligned. I'll send my spare to Tom.

Reality, there is probably one version of the pickup coil / magnet core that had reverse polarity, as long as they were installed as a set, no problem, mix the parts and a problem arises.

Would be nice to know the part or brand on that pickup coil.
Also was the module the recommended one? G Boone said the Taiwanese ones were not as good.
But glad it got fixed , nice team effort :)

Re-visiting an old thread to add my car to the list.

Just bought the set from Tom. Installed easily. Everything looked right, but no love.
Tried again from the start, I even tried moving the dist drive a tooth forward and backward and it really looked wrong, so put it all back the way it was.
Even tried my "Stand and stare at it for a very long time" move and unbelievably it still didn't work.

Then I recalled this thread. Sure enough, checked when it was firing. Right in the open space between the stator blades.
As soon as I reversed the wires to the module-- ROAR!!

Thanks to Keith!! and all ya'll on 311s!!

Hi Everyone- I'm new to posting, not sure but can i reopen this thread by posting here?... I'm having East coast roadster distributor problems as well on my 66 R16 (rebello modified to 1750cc). To be specific i can't seem to get any mechanical advance, it seems to just stay put at 16' when i'm reving it up with the timing light on it. I'm on my second distributor from Tom and each one behaves the same. Obviously i'm not understanding something. Trying to see if perhaps there have been others with this issue and can tell me how to solve.

Many Thanks-Farhad

Had the exact same problem. Really odd because everything checks out and you can feel the movement of the springs and weights working when you twist the shaft with your fingers.
