Removing Water Pump

Post by Gars68 »

Does this bottom bolt ( did not have a nut) have to come out or will the pump housing just slide over it?

The parts Manual shows that is a stud: -

So I guess that's a stud I'm talking about. Do I have to unscrew it? Shouldn't their be a nut on it to tighten the pump down? Thanks Nissanman!

Yes, looks like the nut and spring washer have left the building as they say.
You might need to lube the stud first but the pump should slide over that OK.

Ha ha that makes sense. I'll give it a try. I sprayed it with PB Blaster.

Got it. The PB Blaster worked along with a little tapping. While I'm in here, what else do you recommend I tackle? The front of the engine is obviously caked with grease. The bearing in the pump went shortly after i added a flushing agent to the cooling system. It probably loosened so much crud that it wasted the bearing. Geez...i was hoping to drive it to work this week.
Thanks!

Clean all mating surfaces really well. And use antiseize on all nuts and bolts when reassembling. If i recall one bolt or stud actually goes into a coolant passage and if not cleaned well could leak. Personally i used a bit of toyota fipg along with the gaskets to ensure it wont leak.

I would clean as much of that loose rust off as possible. I would also consider putting a garden hose in and flushing out as much junk as possible now that you have those "big holes" for junk to flow out of.

Don't forget to open the block drain cock, or better still, remove it so the low point gets flushed well.

Ok...making progress. Good advice all around so thank you. Wish I could just run to the local parts store and get a new pump. Regarding this fan clutch, is this the position it needs to be in when I put the two pieces back together? Thanks guys...if you were here I'd buy you a round!

Can you believe it....this is the original fan clutch and 7 blade fan! This fan clutch reminds me of those old centrifugal clutches that I used to use on a mini bike back in the 70's. I'll be buying a spacer that's for sure!

Usual advice is to get rid of the fan clutch, they are prone to fail then your car overheats

get rid of the clutch but you will need a spacer. The vendors have those.
Are you getting any snow up there?

Do you know if a Beck/ Arnley 131-0457 will work? I see it listed in the tech wiki parts exchange and it's a fraction of what the vendors want ( no offense vendors). No snow in Auburn yet but a few miles up hwy 80 they are.

I have an extra spacer that I pulled off my car if you want. It's biodegradable too!
