Lets start with some LSD, what could go wrong?

Post by 2mAn »

Hey all. Roadster NEWB here. A member here (SLOroadster) who I know through another forum (r3vlimited) convinced me that I need a Roadster in my life. I didnt disagree. so with the help of craigslist (HA!), I found my way to a bulk purchase of 3 limited slip differentials and a few other differential oriented items. I figured when I finally buy a roadster, it will need a limited slip, and with 3 of them I could sell one off and basically break even. Logical thinking right?

So, I made the purchase 2 weeks ago, and sort of organized everything into a bin and tucked it away before my wife started asking questions.

I hope to be meeting up this Friday with another member ( I think he's a member), Harlan and he will be teaching a class called, what happens when you buy LSD from an old guy in the desert. Hopefully more shenanigans to come, along with some education along the way.

Questions for those who didnt fall out of the chair laughing at my stupidity, Where do I start? I would like to go through and make sure that these are all good units and I have two ring gear/ pumpkins that I want to fully build up and sell the 3rd diff. I know I will probably need to replace the bearings in the rear ends, Will said I can get them from the Nissan dealership still. Anyone have part #s?

Ok, thats enough chit chat, time for the pics:

I don't know... as a teenager when I did LSD I talked to God (I wasn't even close to religious!), watched trees march across the river, and even talked to one on its epic journey to the other side of the Cascade range (Wha? Trees can walk? WOW!).

This helps me relate to those poor folks who come into the ER suffering from psychotic disorders that have Charles Manson leaving coffins in their kitchen and saying that he is coming back for the cat (true story)... hallucinations seem real! I get it!

Oh... not that kind of LSD... my bad...

Where do you go to get parts and rebuilds on these things? Are the clutches and stuff available?

Im not sure, Harlan checked everything out today and these definitely need to be rebuilt. He mentioned a place in Colorado, I will be doing more research to find out.

Meanwhile, I took a pic of the stamping on the gear(s). Tell me what you think about these ratios. Pretty wild I think

Pretty wild for street use but in the sweet spot for track use.

Only if you have the ultra close ratio gearbox. With a standard 5 spd, on the track, those would be pretty short.

Sorry, I find modern engine swaps revolting. Keep your G, R, or U series in your Roadster!

So one of the units I sold to Brian (sincitydatsuns) turned out to be a gem inside and I figure I would add the pics he sent me here, just in case people want to see what the insides of these units look like and contain:

So a little bit of frustrating news today. I was trying to confirm that the 4.875 is for a roadster and not the truck, but it has 29 splines which from what I was told is the truck spline. I figured I should confirm the other one is for a roadster and counted 23 splines. Im also 99% sure its a LSD unit also because its totally different looking for the 4.875 and looks exactly like the LSD units that I have separate.

Heres the splines on the 4.625

Heres the 4.875 to compare

Im thinking about selling the 4.625 now... really wish I could've just sold the 4.875 and had one good unit

So which ratio do you want to use because if they are both lsd's you can swap the side gears which engage the axles.

I have another LSD that I will keep as a spare for if and when I have a roadster that needs it. For now, Im trying to trim the collection of extra parts. I wont be using the 4.875 for sure, but now I think I will be stuck with it  I would love to sell the 4.875 so I can focus on the 4.625, but if someone wants it, I will just sell that.
