Stealth Instrument Voltage Regulator Fix

Post by devo »

Piggybacking on Nissanman's brilliant and inexpensive fix for the instrument voltage regulator that plagues a lot of Roadsters, I found a simple and inexpensive alternative to soldering the tiny probes of the solid state regulator itself. By use of a computer fan 3 pin extension plug purchased from Ebay, you can plug the VR directly into it and just place Nissan type connectors on the wire ends. Then, just plug and play into your dash harness. All of the assembly will fit nicely right back into the original VR can, and can be bolted back up in the original location. All for about $6. You'll even have 9 more VRs left over in case you need a replacement down the road.
Black wire is 12V input
Yellow wire is 8V output
Red wire is ground

Pretty slick! I went ahead and added the resisters as per another post and then hot glued all the wires individually to keep from shorting against each other. Your idea is so stock Oemish, nice.

Nah, This is too good, simple, and easy to not share it. I've learned so much on this forum, I gotta give something back. Did you ever buy those Toyota door stops Greg? They do work great.

Nope, not yet... it's on my winter hibernation to do list! But I may be pulling the engine to inspect the trans for some shifting issues if a new slave cylinder does not solve the problem.

This seems like a easy enough fix, even for me :)
Would these items be available at Fry's or perhaps an electronic supply store ? I also wonder if there are cases available? That way a complete new VR could be made.

Sadly-Linda has passed away 2022. She was the 311's den mother and drove the first Rare-Parts ball joint project. RIP.

Is the VR into plug just push into place? I am pushing pretty firmly and the pins are not fully seating in the plug as seen in the 3rd picture from right above.

Awesome solution! @devo
So easy to build and it works great! Putting the links in was really helpful too.
