Just so you all know, if I remember correctly, I had completely fried the alternator when it shorted out. A rebuild solved the problem.

Hey, thread revival!
Found a YouTube video that tests the diodes but doesn't tell you which one. Still it is a simple test and the video was clear. Useful if you just want to know that a diode somewhere is bad. Zero in on the video to see the diode setting, or on the HF multimeter the instructions tell you which setting it is:
