I need examples of battery relocation

Post by Zedyone_Kenobi »

I would like to move my battery to the trunk of my roadster. The sole reason for this is to clean up the engine bay. Nothing more. Have any of you done this, if so, can you recommend a mounting scheme and grounding scheme. Thanks!

Here is the Odyssey Extreme and the Odyssey aluminum box. Great combo of small size and cranking power, sorry not a great picture though.

My concern would be putting a thing that makes sparks on top of a thing that holds gasoline.

I located mine in the trunk against the back wall, in the middle. It's bolted down using a traditional aftermarket method bolting method you can buy as the local autoparts store that I had handy, made somewhat difficult as the holes drilled into the floor for the bolts that hold it down are under the fuel tank as I recall. I use a sealed Ultima battery, standard size. Obviously the cables are quite long to reach up front, but the freeing up of under the hood space has been nice.

IIRC, Michael puts a box in the package shelf for a concealed battery.

How is everyone running the wiring? Down the passenger side? What about the grounds at the engine?

Wiring down the passenger side, away from the exhaust.
Ground wire run from battery to engine block, frame to block to body grounds coming soon.

I'm a big fan of the package shelf, also makes it easy for a battery disconnect behind the pass seat. If you get one of the mini batteries, it gets easier. Battery cable should be in something like split loom and secured with insulated clamps under the car. You could run it inside the car along the trans tunnel under the carpet, but it would need to be in something semi-rigid, like PEX tubing. IIRC, the 64 ran the cable in a channel attached to the floor.

With a Braille, you could even put it up on the pass side kick panel or on the firewall where the speakerbox was. 6"x6"x3.5" Got me thinking about doing it. Make room for a power brake servo.

Bobd - nice, I have a similar collection of parts waiting to go in.

I am planning on putting a Deka etx18L battery in the rear passenger fender well. (my fender wells are a little wider than stock, so my plan may not work for others)

Thanks, there is an inertia switch awaiting installation and I still need to run the actual power wire up front.

Was hesitant to drill holes in the trunk floor (one more to go), but I welded a steel plate in that triangular section where the wires are going through to reinforce it.

This is exactly the info I was looking for! The speaker location in the foot well is a VERY interesting idea. I just refinished my speaker box though.. DRAT.

How about on the floor, behind the seat between the drive line hump and the wheel arch? My seats are in the back holes, full back on the slider and I'll bet there still room for small battery.
The small dry cell batteries are tiny and would probably fit pretty easily there and still be accessable.

Has anyone used this exact battery? I like the idea of Li-ion. I just want to make sure it has enough Ooomp. I put in a 62 amp Gm alternator and new forklift starter if it makes a difference. Also the price of this seems to make the transition to Li-ion a no brainer.
