U20 prototype? oil pan

Post by ted heaton »

I have come into possession of this unique small volume cast aluminium comp. style oil pan.
Same shape as the R16 steel pan but about 1" deeper. Might hold a quart more.
The U20 service manual has some wonderful pictures in the first 20+ pages that include at least 3 parts that
apparently did not see production. The beautiful 3 winged bolt open air cleaner, exhaust manifold without the center seam
on the runner from cyls 2 and 3 and this pan (page 21).
The pictures of all 3 U20 motors on page 1 seem to show this pan.
I will surmise that Nissan intended to use this pan on the new U20 motor but decided to use the standard steel pan
and made the 7 qt aluminum pan for the 150 HP Mikuni package.
Anyone have one?. ( Except Stan, who probably has 3 :D ).
Anyone know more info about it?
There are 2 entries in the parts manual for Solex pans. The first has a part # that indicates the source vehicle was the SP311?
VERY interesting!
This piece could be available for those interested in the obscure details of Roadster history.

That was the comp pan for the pushrod motors before the larger U20 pan became available. I missed out on one years ago. A neat gee whiz item!

Hi Ted,

Peachy ... looks like this pan allows for some additional clearance when pulling an engine (compared to the 7 qt pan I already have)!
Something I do not need to worry about, as my engine will soon be scattered on the road anyway
(shooting for 8000 rpm, but my new MSD rev limiter stops at 7700)

That's pretty cool!

Never seen the exhaust manifold, air cleaner or pan before!

Looks a lot less likely to get crack open than the regular Solex pan. Especially good model if you car is lowered in the front.
Oil a little low? Time to get a longer dipstick:)

Wow, so there are at least two?

It's times like these when I ask myself, "why don't I have one"?

NO need to be sad. It could be yours in exchange for the 3 bolt solex air cleaner! or more likely some $.

That pan is pretty sweet! I kind of expected to see it depicted in the image below, but looks like the 7qt pan instead.

Ted,
I don't have any oil pans like the one you show but I have a few grilles. Heard that you were looking for one.

Cole,
That picture is interesting. It has a cylinder head and 7 valves, 4 intake and 3 exhaust. Also has a RHD heat shield and Weber carbs.

Well those look nice.

Hi: I am in the process of pulling parts of a 1600 parts car (67.5). I noticed it had a nice looking aluminum oil pan on the bottom of the 1600 engine. It looks like the one in the picture you posted. Would this fit on a 2 L engine?

The oil pans on the G, R, H and U20 all have the same mounting - they can all swap. Some are not a wise choice, but they can bolt on.
