1964 Roadster/ SR20DE wiring
Hey all, Im currently preparing my roadster/ SR20DE swap for wiring. I'm trying to gather all documentation needed, and figure it all out before I start splicing away. So, I'm looking for feedback/ approval from any and all who have done this swap, and the wiring. My knowledge around wiring is by no means expert, but I'm familiar with basic concepts, and rationales. My plan is to wire everything from scratch. Meaning, new battery, cables, fuse box's, relays, and more or less sockets where reasonable (light bulbs, brake switch, etc). Also, I was thinking of adding 4 gauge ground wires (2 in engine bay to frame, 1 in trunk to frame, and 1 from battery to battery in cabin) in addition to all other grounds. So please correct me if I'm wrong, and or let me know if I'm right.
Here it goes:
Fuses: Everything can/ should get a fuse. I'm not too worried about this procedure. I imagine its safer to for everything to have a fuse, rather than not.
Relays: My understanding is, anything that requires a "decision" or can be overloaded by too much power needs a relay (ie. fuel pump, headlights, radiator fan). Also, each relay would need to have a fuse, for safety.
ECU: Unnecessary controls can be removed ( power steering module, ac/heater etc), which would result in less of a power draw by the ecu, and fewer potential electrical problems.
Ignition: I'm fairly lost with this. I'm not sure how to wire the on and start positions.
Id like to use some universal fuse boxes for the main fuse box and the relays, like these:
I have this pin out map, which matches my S14 WA ECU:
This relay wiring diagram, which also matches the above diagram:
Do the IACV and Air regulator wires come straight from each unit to the relay?
Id like to do something like this for the ECU:
Is this correct? Starter/ Alternator diagram:
So here is what I've gathered so far:
Relays: Fuel pump, ECCS, radiator fan, reverse lights,and headlights all need relays. What about windshield wipers, turn signals, horn? Do they NEED relays? or just fuses?
I'm thinking the wiring would be as so:
Heater blower: battery-->fuse-->heater blower
Radio: battery-->radio (radio has its own fuse)
Map light: battery--> fuse-->switch--> map light
Cigarette lighter: battery--> fuse-->Cigarette lighter
Reverse light: battery-->fuse-->relay: (reverse sensor in transmission, ignition power, ground, bulb)
Brake lights:battery-->fuse-->brake light switch--> bulbs
Fuel pump:battery-->fuse--> relay: (ignition power, ground, fuel pump, ecu)
headlights:battery-->fuse-->relay: (headlight switch, bulbs, 12v power,ground)
Radiator fan:battery-->fuse-->relay: (fan switch, ignition power, ground, fan)
Horns: battery-->fuse-->horn button-->horns
Ignition: unknown, please help
Gauges: Ignition power-->fuse--> each gauges source ( fuel level, water temp, speed sensor from transmission, tach wire ecu, volts any source, oil pressure sensor). BTW, i purchased speedhut electronic gauges, which come with all the harnesses, and wiring diagrams.
Starter: 4 gauge wire from alternator, smaller wire from ignition
Wipers: battery--> fuse--> wiper switch--> wiper mechanism
Turn signals:battery--> fuse--> turn switch-->bulbs
Windshield squirters: battery--> fuse--> squirter switch--> squirter mechanism (relay to tie in the wipers?)
ECU: 12v constant or ignition?, ground
That's all i can figure for now. Please provide feedback if you have first hand knowledge. Id really appreciate it.
Also, does anyone have a definitive "ecu de-pin" list? Can I just remove all unnecessary pins/ wires?

One of the things I am not seeing is which items that the Hot is switched and which are Hot all the time.....
I.E. Cigarette Lighter is usually hot all the time.....Reverse Lamps the hot is also switched

Right. I'm basing this on modern cars; please correct me if it is not accurate to the 64, and or appropriate:fj20spl311 wrote:One of the things I am not seeing is which items that the Hot is switched and which are Hot all the time.....

Hot ( constant 12v):
Head and tail lights
horns
hazards
Map light
That seems logical to me . Anything I'm missing? Cigarette lighter, in older cars yes, newer cars no, right? I can go either way on that.
Thank you for the feedback Phil. The link you provided is great!

Interior lights, alarm?, clock
IMHO, headlights and radio are optional..

I'm gonna go with a painless 21 mini fuse kit. They're very affordable, and will give me piece of mind. Anyone have input on the relays, and ecu concerns?

A little off topic but:fj20spl311 wrote:Interior lights, alarm?, clock

Some do not want the headlights sucking electrons away from electronic fuel injection ...

Thanks Michael. Could I use bosh style 4 prong relays for the horns and headlights?spriso wrote:See my diagram in the link above-- it has everything you need to make it run.

Me too. I had forgotten about this product, and how affordable it is. Very much worth the price!fj20spl311 wrote:I like the EZ Wiring -Mini 20 - 21 Circuit Wiring Harnesszeddiea27 wrote:I'm gonna go with a painless 21 mini fuse kit.
