Resonator (yes or no?) & OEM part?

Post by Fkentb1945 »

I just took my recently restored 69 roadster on a road trip to Bozeman MT for a car show. (Got 1st place in the Import Class by the way). It however was a noisy trip at highway speeds. My car probably has the original exhaust system on it as it only has 27K original miles on it. It however doesn't have a resonator.
The "thorraty" sound is fine around town but in the interest in making the car as close to original as possible I would consider putting a resonator on it if I could find one that fit and wasn't outragously expensive. The only one I have found from the Parts guys (Datsun Parts and Rallye) is part of a full exhaust system ($1,200) and I don't need that! Any help on value/necessity of a resonator, and OEM or alternative part source would be greatly appreciated.

Rallye has the resonator for less (well a little)

EFG 20 203-04 RESONATOR, Chrome Megaphone - or in Kit below NI $525.10

I am surprised that Ross has never fixed the link for his online catalog...

You could always go to a muffler shop to find one that fits and buy a MEGS exhaust tip to make it replicate the original...

Aside from the actual, OEM part you listed there is a gentleman here named Jim (JT68) that is producing top-notch OEM exhaust systems in full stainless steel

You could paint the resonator flat black, for an OEM look!

For another aftermarket option see:

An Empi VW part you can cut to spec and get welded on to the resonator, if you get one.
Quite a few owners have done this.

Thanks for the post Alvin and Linda!

PM'd with some other options too.

Funny, no one (that I know of) who has ever seen or bought one of these has had the inclination to paint it black....they are just too nice. Since they are 100% Stainless they'll far and away outlast the original.

So at about 120 yen to the dollar this stainless one is about $300 plus fees and shipping. I have my stuff sent sea mail so probably about $350 total.

I got a solex filter housing and new kangaroo bag through this auction.

Well I do speak it and I was thinking of trying to look this one guy when I'm over there. Seems like he is the one that restores them.
