LED Third Brake Light from license plate light
Hi all.
I know this isn't new but the LED lights may be. I was referred to a place called Custom Dynamics (http://www.customdynamics.com/) and they have an LED strip they call "TruFlex" that fits very well into the lens of an older model license plate light. They're only .3" X .34" in various lengths.
I bought the 15 LED 2.76" length.
http://www.customdynamics.com/truflex_f ... ghting.htm
The only modification that I had to do to the license plate light was remove the original pigtail to feed the new wires through.
This isn't done (there is just a piece of foam crammed under the LED strip to hold it in) but it sure gives the feeling of the end product. The plan is to fabricate a 90 degree bracket to stick the LED strip to. I think it'll be pretty simple to do.
I was surprised at how bright these lights are. I'm thinking I may have to put some frosting inside the lens to tone it down a bit.

Best to mount it a eye level if possible. Mine is on the roll bar hoop.

Re: LED Third Brake Light from license plate light
Hi Phil.
No doubt eye level is best. I wanted something on the deck, obviously below eye level. With this LED strip it has a 120 degree viewing angle. That'll be somewhat limited by the chrome piece but it's still pretty wide.
It is really hard to show in pictures how truly bright these LEDs are. The camera reacted as if it was being pointed directly at the sun. I've done some experimention and had people look at the light. They all agree that it's very noticeable. Sure if someone was on your bumper in a big truck that would be a problem.
My thought is that any additional light will help. Fortunately I don't live in an area with lots of traffic so I don't end up in bumper to bumper, stop and go stuff very often. And usually only on the major streets.
I'll see if I can get some brights sun pictures from different angles to demonstrate the brightness.

I used one like this. Super bright, the light alone will stop the car behind me!

That's just a camera reflection. People I work with complain to me how bright it is. I say "GOOD".

It's pretty hard to miss, I can see it's reflection from street signs in the mirrors.
